Marshall Centre writes:
As we begin phase three of lockdown easing, bars and restaurants can start serving guests indoors again, the cinemas are reopening, university students can return to in-person lectures and we can start travelling to ‘green-listed’ countries, which is great news for the sectors and people who were hit the hardest by lockdown. With the introduction of free rapid-flow test kits and nearly 2/3 of the UK population having received their first vaccine, we are slowly starting to win the battle against COVID-19. However, the aftereffects in terms of the devastating impact on our economy, will likely be felt for years to come.
Many people have been out of work long-term due to redundancies, business closures and prolonged furlough and, according to Nottingham University (2020), “when jobs and firms are destroyed by economic crises, the economy loses skills and capacity that are hard to re-build.” So, it is vital that the business who have managed to survive the crisis, invest in staff training, retraining and development to help fill those skills gaps and rebuild the economy.
It can be tempting in a downturn economy to reduce investment in learning and development. However, according to Deloitte (2016), "high-performing companies invest 1.5 – 2 times more on leadership development than low-performing companies." Training your leaders and mangers should be an ongoing priority and not just a luxury during the strong years because it boosts morale, improves retention, increases productivity, attracts new talent and reduces the capability gap.
At Marshall Centre we offer a range of leadership development programmes to suit every need and budget:
