In 31 categories, the jury selected the products with the most successful product concept from 4,928 entries. The jury’s assessment criteria included degree of innovation, functionality, ergonomics or durability. “Straight lines characterise the look of the digital microscope and effectively emphasise its functions”, read the juror statement of the 38 international experts.
ZEISS Smartzoom 5 is an integrated complete digital system with clear components, and is operational within a few minutes. Once the quality inspector has placed the sample under the microscope, he does not have to switch back and forth between the device and software, but can perform all the necessary steps straight on the screen. He can then save this workflow so it is always available again. For the first time in microscopy, this allows efficient, reproducible and user-independent analysis. "ZEISS Smartzoom 5 is one of many tools in the production environment, just like pliers or calipers. It fits well into production processes and performs many of the steps for the user", says product manager Dominik Stehr. The product design is the work of the agency ID WEBER.
Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of the Red Dot Award, emphasized that innovation was not always visible to the naked eye: “Often it is hidden aspects, such as a refined technology inside the product or an improved combination of materials, that constitute a lucid, and sometimes brilliant, new development. However, the products that withstand the critical eyes of the international Red Dot jury will not sink into oblivion, but excel in the global arena."
The official award ceremony will take place on 29 June 2015 at Essen’s Aalto-Theater. The Red Dot Design Museum Essen will include the award-winning products in an exhibition for at least a year, and the Red Dot Design Yearbook will present the year’s best designs. All products and their producers will also feature in the online presentation and the Red Dot 21 global design directory as well as in the Red Dot App.
