RealVNC achieves world's first certified MirrorLink™ 1.1 device

RealVNC, the global provider of VNC® remote access and control software, is proud to announce the world’s first, and currently only, MirrorLink™ 1.1 certified device.

Tested at the MirrorLink Paris Plugfest in October 2013, the device was granted full certification status by the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) on 5th November.

The implementation is a fully certified MirrorLink 1.1 Server for Android, running on a Samsung Galaxy Nexus device. The CCC has selected this as a mandatory device for IOP testing of MirrorLink 1.1 Clients. RealVNC makes this reference implementation available to the CCC Approved Test Laboratories (ATLs) for certification testing; its own OEM customers for their development and testing purposes; and to any other CCC members in good standing.

The underlying RealVNC Software Development Kit (SDK) is already in use by several phone manufacturers working on production programs. They can now proceed quickly and confidently to achieve efficient MirrorLink certification of their devices. It is expected that several major phone vendors will launch multiple handsets and tablet devices in the coming weeks; all based on RealVNC’s MirrorLink 1.1 SDK.

“We are thrilled to have the world’s first MirrorLink 1.1 certified device. These are exciting times in the automotive industry, and we can expect to see game-changing announcements and multiple releases of new devices in 2014,” says Tom Blackie, Vice President Mobile of RealVNC. “Not only is this the first certified device, it also sets the benchmark by which other vendors will now be measured. The MirrorLink 1.1 Server delivers high speed and low latency, countering the perception that MirrorLink is slow which was created previously by some poor quality third-party implementations.

“Having been working largely in stealth mode for the past two years, it is interesting to see the recent announcement (see: http://telematicsnews.info/2013/11/27/vw-to-offer-mirrorlink_n4279/) where Volkswagen has declared their hand and we can expect to see MirrorLink in VW 2014 production vehicles,” added Blackie.

“This fits with RealVNC’s understanding of the market, where more than ten major automotive OEMs, across all geographic regions, are working with Tier 1 suppliers who are actively using RealVNC Client SDKs within production programs to bring MirrorLink to the market during 2014. It will be interesting to see who is next to break cover and who will be first to market. We anticipate several million vehicles next year.

“As such, RealVNC commends MirrorLink 1.1 to our industry and ecosystem partners; urges them to embrace MirrorLink 1.1 and proceed quickly to bring their products to market.”
