Marshall supports Campaign to Protect Rural England litter initiative

Marshall of Cambridge are throwing their weight behind the Campaign to Protect Rural England’s countryside litter initiative. Robert Marshall, Chief Operating Officer of Marshall of Cambridge and Chairman of Cambridge Airport, presented a £500 cheque to the CPRE yesterday (Monday) at the Marshall of Cambridge Head Office.

Mr Marshall said: ‘Since our foundation in the Motor Business 102 years ago, Marshall has always had a real care for the environment and has worked tirelessly to ensure that our land and property provide the very best appearance, so that they are enjoyed by both our employees and the local communities in which our businesses are based.  At our Cambridge Airport site this has included careful stewardship of our boundaries and the planting of literally thousands of trees.  We also work hard to remove other people’s litter from our land, and I am delighted that we are able to make a financial contribution to CPRE’s very important litter campaign.

Michael Hellowell, branch Co-ordinator of CPRE’s Anti-Litter Campaign said: “Considerable progress has been made in staging ‘Big Tidy Ups’ in and around Cambridge, in particular in the South Cambridgeshire villages.  During the past two years we have recruited valuable help from CPRE members, Rotary International, Parish Councils and village volunteers – including many children.  Essential litter picking equipment has been made available by CPRE to groups keen to keep their localities and villages free from mounting litter.  Marshall’s generous contribution will allow us to buy new kits so we can continue our campaign – and hopefully spread it to other parts of the County.”

Notes for Editors:

Founded in 1909 with little capital as a chauffeur drive company in Cambridge, Marshall moved into the retail motor business in 1910, obtained the Austin Distributorship for Cambridgeshire in 1920 and entered the aviation business in 1929.  With all its growth funded by ploughed-back profits, the Marshall Group remains a privately owned family Company, with a turnover of over £1bn per annum.  The Group of Companies is chaired by the third generation of the Marshall family, and employs members of the fourth generation.  The Group currently employs just over 4,000 people working in the fields of aerospace engineering; design and manufacture of specialist vehicle applications, military mobility shelters and hospital surgical units; motor vehicle sales and after sales support; refrigerated transport sales and support; and property ownership and management.   (

CPRE Cambridgeshire and Peterborough speaks up for the English countryside: to protect it from the threats it faces, and to shape its future for the better. CPRE values the beauty of our local landscape and is committed to protecting and enhancing it.  Cambridgeshire is the fastest-growing county in the fastest growing region of England and is therefore subject to pressures which threaten its traditional character, particularly from intensive arable farming and development.

Founded in 1909, the Marshall Group has a turnover of £2.5bn and over 5,700 employees. Headquartered on a 900-acre site in Cambridge, Marshall has three principal arms to the business: Aerospace and Defence; Property; and Ventures.
