Wings around Britain


Aviatrix Polly Vacher MBE - who is currently flying around Great Britain to raise money for the Royal International Air Tattoo Flying Scholarships for the Disabled Scheme in memory of Group Captain Sir Douglas Barder, CBE DSO DFC - will be landing her Piper Dakota Aircraft at Cambridge City Airport on Tuesday 3 July 2007.

On her arrival Polly will be met by senior executives from Marshall of Cambridge, as well as a number of civic dignitaries and business leaders from the region, including Councillor Jenny Bailey, the Mayor of Cambridge.

Polly’s mammoth journey started on 21 May 2007 at Birmingham Airport, and on the completion of her flight on 31 July she will become the first person to have landed at all 206 airfields in the United Kingdom. Her departure from Birmingham International Airport on 21 May was in formation with a Euro Fighter Typhoon Aircraft of the Royal Air Force. On 31 July Polly will be escorted to Oxford airfield by a 1940 Hawker Hurricane restored by her husband Peter.

Polly Vacher and her Piper Dakota first flew into the record books in 2001 when she became the first woman to fly solo around the world via the Pacific in such a small aircraft. In 2004 she did it again becoming the first woman to fly solo over the North Pole and the first person to land on all seven continents.

Polly was born in 1944 in Dartmouth Devon. She trained as a Physiotherapist and also has a degree in Music. She is an accomplished pianist regularly giving concerts as well as teaching music. Polly learned to fly in 1994 and she and her husband have taken an active interest in Flying Scholarships for the Disabled for a number of years and to date Polly and her team have raised almost £500,000.
