Three specialist, expandable containers have been delivered to the Swedish defence procurement authorities – FMV (Forsvarets Materielverk) by Marshall SV (MSV), the Cambridge based specialist vehicle and shelter designers. The three containers have been fitted out for command and liaison, stores and workplace, and maintenance.
Marshall SV delivers new insulated protected HQ shelters
The fully expanding three in one containers were specified by the Swedish Defence Command and are expected to join other expanding shelters in Swedish and allied forces service. The £1.4 million contract was completed in phases over two years and allows the FMV to place an enabling contract on MSV for future requirements.
The phased contract was based on milestones designed to satisfy Swedish requirements whilst ensuring that the needs of the operational users were taken into account at all stages.
The first phase, for two containers, was for initial design including Electro Magnetic Shielding (Level 2) and high levels of CBRN protection. Phase 2 included mechanical installation, electric power and lighting, electronic communications installation, verification of the installation and execution of system safety work. This work was conducted on the first two shelters and after they had passed operational and environmental testing a third was added to the order (phase 3). In the fourth phase the shelters were fitted out to full operational standards with electronic communications and display systems, furniture and other role requirements.
When collapsed the three shelters accommodate all the moveable fixtures and fittings within themselves thus making the ISO 20ft configuration extremely cost effective for both transport and deployment. Based on the MSV Matrix Shelter the shelters can be transported by land, sea and, in C130 aircraft, by air. Fork lift stations and hook loader lifting points are included within the ISO footprint as are the CBRN and climatic controls. The whole system has to survive Swedish climatic extremes as well as those of the areas where deployment is likely.
Commenting on the contract Peter Callaghan CEO of MSV said “We are extremely pleased firstly to receive this order and secondly to complete it so quickly and to FMV’s quality standards. Our aim in the work was to fully engage with the FMV specialists to ensure we were designing and building to meet the very high capability needs of the users. We have really appreciated the closeness of the working relationship which has ensured that as the contract has developed from the initial order the new developments have been incorporated in a thoughtful, agile and cost effective way.”
During the course of the two years MSV deployed a flexible team on the project suited to the activity being undertaken at the time. The team normally consisted of 8-12 people.
The Marshall SV Matrix Shelter consists of one central 20ft ISO container with two expandable units, the outcome being equivalent to three containers side by side. The unit can be fully expanded and deployed in less than 10 minutes and is fully fitted for role with all stores inside the unit. Matrix Shelters are in use with many armed forces around the world and are qualified to UK Def Stan, US Mil Standard and NATO 6516/SHCPE standards.
Marshall Specialist Vehicles (MSV) is the Land Systems Arm of Marshall Group.
