PA Consulting sponsors UK Cardiovascular Innovation Award

PA Consulting Group, the leading international management, systems and technology consultancy, is supporting UK innovation in medical device technology through sponsorship of the 2008 Cardiovascular Innovation Awards, one of six clinical categories that make up the Medical Futures Innovation Awards (MFIA).

These awards are run in association with the Department of Health, the Medical Research Council and the British Cardiovascular Society.

The MFIA provide a unique opportunity for inventors, scientists and entrepreneurs to get visibility for fledging medical ideas, products or businesses. The winner – judged by an esteemed panel of 60 clinical and commercial experts – will secure funding, commercial guidance and professional and commercial introductions.

Stewart Fox, Consultant in Healthcare Product Development at PA’s Cambridge UK Technology Centre, and a judge on this year’s Cardiovascular panel, comments:

‘The entries are highly varied, and this forum presents an unrivalled chance for clinicians, venture capitalists and the NHS to spot and nurture the kind of innovative technology and services which could make a big difference to future healthcare.'

By sponsoring the cardiovascular award PA hopes to foster the up and coming innovators of tomorrow.

Following a Dragon’s Den style pitch to the judges, over 30 short listed entrants will exhibit their ideas and learn the outcome of the competition at Medical Futures’ Award Ceremony in London on 2 December 2008, attended by over 800 movers and shakers from healthcare, business and the media.

The judging criteria are novelty, impact on patient care and viability. This year’s panel includes Nobel Laureate Sir James Black OM, Sir Bruce Keogh – Medical Director for the NHS, and Sir Christopher O’Donnell, supported by celebrity award presentation.

Medical Futures’ Innovation Awards – Innovators’ Gallery (Cancer, Orthopaedics, Cardiovascular, ENT & Audiology, Dentistry, Opthalmology) from 11.30am followed by Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner - Grounds of the Honourable Artillery Company, off Chiswell Street, London EC1, Tuesday, 2 December 2008.

A copy of PA’s report on this year’s Award entrants will be available for downloading from its website after 2 December.

About the Medical Futures Innovation Awards

The Medical Futures Innovation Awards are a unique UK based Awards process that helps healthcare professionals and academics turn their ideas into tangible solutions that can improve patient care.

The Awards, run by a team of doctors, businessmen and media and communication experts, are part of a wider offering that includes educational and networking events between industry and the medical profession and in 2008, over 1000 ideas have been submitted via the website

By entering the Medical Futures Awards process, front line clinicians and academics have the chance to pitch their ideas in a Dragon’s Den style to a world-class panel of experts including the likes of Sir Bruce Keogh, Medical Director for the NHS; Baroness Susan Greenfield, Director of the Royal Institution; and Tom Ilube, Co-Founder of Egg Internet Bank. The Judges select winners based on three principle criteria: - novelty; impact on patient care and its viability, whether that is clinical, technical or commercial.

As well as the critical recognition and endorsement of a Medical Futures Innovation Award, winners receive a bespoke package of support to turn ideas into viable propositions that have credibility with investors. This may include assistance in articulating their idea; securing funding; and introductions to professional and commercial contacts vital in taking their idea to the next level.

The 2008 Awards ceremony takes place on 2nd December and consists of an exhibition held during the day and an evening awards ceremony. During the day winners can showcase their idea, network, and participate in press interviews. The overall winners in each category are presented with their award during the evening ceremony which includes a guest list of over 800 including celebrities, business leaders and key medical and scientific opinion leaders.
