Comment on the broadband investment in yesterday's budget

Commenting on the broadband investment in yesterday's (Wednesday's) budget, David Halstead, TMT Partner at Deloitte said: "The initiative announced in yesterday's budget is an exciting development for broadband users in the UK.

"Superfast broadband connectivity gives users access to a better online experience and can create opportunities for companies to innovate in the way that they do business. The challenge will be in the implementation. The broadband market in the UK moves very quickly and, if these funds are to have the desired impact, they need to be spent quickly and effectively on broadband infrastructure.”

Commenting on technology investments in general:

“The announcement by the Chancellor that the UK will become ‘Europe’s technology centre’ is great news for the industry and a shot in the arm for all entrepreneurs, businesses and the economy. The UK now has the opportunity to lead this sector and demonstrate unparalleled business opportunity.

In particular, the £50m to improve net access in ‘smaller cities’ is a positive step forward to creating a truly super-connected country.

We also welcome Government’s £100 million investment in support of new university science research facilities. Technology and science skills are much in demand in the UK so this investment will help young people gain easier access to these critical skills and increase their chances of entering the workplace much sooner.”
