RealVNC puts smartphones at the centre of in-vehicle infotainment at Telematics Detroit

RealVNC will be featuring its latest smartphone-centric, in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) connectivity solution at Telematics Detroit from June 6th-7th. VNC® Automotive can automatically detect, access and control virtually any mobile device or desktop computer from a vehicle’s touch-screen or fixed input devices such as steering wheel switches and head unit buttons and menus.

The increasing adoption of VNC technology has been further strengthened by recently announced partnerships with STMicroelectronics, Sony Mobile Communications and CSR. Other major car manufacturers, handset vendors, network operators and Tier 1 suppliers working with RealVNC include Jaguar Land Rover, RIM, Clarion, Wipro, Cybercom, Denso, Visteon, Teleca and QNX.

VNC Automotive technology is the most robust and advanced standard for mobile and vehicle integration, enabling drivers to access and control the content of their smartphones such as maps, music and internet radio, safely from the vehicle head unit. Unlike other connectivity protocols that are available only to drivers with the newest handsets, VNC Automotive provides support for the widest range of mobile and head unit platforms including for legacy handsets.

Earlier this month, STMicroelectronics announced that it was integrating VNC Automotive in its automotive-grade infotainment application processors with embedded GPS that are already being used in the development of high-performance head-unit products. In February, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, it was also announced that VNC Automotive has been integrated in Sony Mobile Communication’s Android based Xperia™ smartphones, enabling them to connect directly to vehicle infotainment systems to access smartphone applications safely from the dashboard display as well as for use by helpdesk agents to provide better remote support to Xperia™ users. And in another recent partnership agreement, VNC Automotive is being incorporated by CSR into its SiRFPrimaIITM System on Chip aimed at the entry level automotive navigation market that enables a connection to be made to the phone via Wi-Fi as the driver approaches the vehicle.

“VNC Automotive is the most robust and advanced standard for mobile to vehicle connectivity,” says Tom Blackie, Vice President Mobile at RealVNC. “Having been to Telematics Detroit last year as well as the Telematics events in Munich and Tokyo – it is very clear that the global race for smartphone centric IVI is accelerating rapidly and we are excited to be at the centre of mobile and vehicle integration developments.”

As a core member of the Car Connectivity Consortium, RealVNC is committed to providing a safe and seamless experience of smartphone use in vehicle. VNC Automotive also supports other protocols including MirrorLink™, a specification underpinned by VNC technology, and iPod Out, a system that allows an iPhone 3G/3GS/4 or iPod Touch to display the video interface on an in-vehicle head unit.
