Three million hours worked on North West Cambridge development site

Three million construction hours have now been worked on the North West Cambridge Development to create the new district in Cambridge. Works on the University of Cambridge led development began in 2013 and the first phase is due for completion in 2017, with the local centre to be known as Eddington.

Gavin Heaphy, Construction Director for the North West Cambridge Development said: “The pace of construction has been incredible. In May, we celebrated two million hours on site and reaching another milestone this year highlights the intensity of construction and the scale of the project. We look forward to completing buildings throughout 2017 and opening up this new part of Cambridge.”

The project, which is the University of Cambridge’s largest single capital project, has over 1000 operatives on-site, working daily across multiple contractor lots to build the new district.  The local centre will be known as “Eddington” and will include 700 homes for University staff, 325 post-graduate student rooms, a supermarket, community centre, energy centre along with vital infrastructure and open space to support the new community.   Additionally there will be market housing for private sale to complement the development.

Work on the development began in 2013 with the enabling works and site-wide infrastructure before additional main contractors were appointed to develop the built environment. In that time, the school building has been completed and opened to schedule in September 2015, and the shape of the development is taking its form with road junctions, landscape and the built environment emerging.

The main contractors who have worked on site for the University include: BAM Construct, Ener-G, Farrans, Graham Construction, RG Carter, Skanska, Vital Energi, Wates Construction and Willmott Dixon.

There will be phased completions of the first phase of development.  The University of Cambridge Primary School opened in 2015 and welcomed its second intake of pupils this year.  Completions of the student accommodation, University homes, Community Centre, Supermarket and public realm will occur from throughout 2017.  Strategic milestones for the first phase of development can be found here.
