The Rt Hon Sir John Major KG CH speaks at London dinner for EACH

The former Prime Minister, Sir John Major, last week supported East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices' (EACH) nook appeal by attending a dinner to raise awareness and funds for the charity.

EACH launched the nook appeal in November 2014, which aims to raise £10 million to transform children’s palliative care across the county, and includes a new purpose-built hospice “the nook” on a 5-acre woodland site in Framingham Earl just south of Norwich.

During his speech, Sir John focused on the need for “the nook”.  He spoke from the heart about the services that EACH provides, and recounted a number of stories of individual children – and their families – who had received care and support from the charity.

He also spoke about how often we take life for granted, and that it is therefore hard to imagine the pain and anguish of parents when a young life is snatched away too soon.  As a parent and grandparent himself, Sir John said that he found the bravery exhibited by the children and families thrown into such terrible circumstances humbling to witness.

He went on to say that the recent tragic events that have taken place in our country over the last few months have served to remind him that – when it comes to helping those in need – the British people are possibly the most kind-hearted and generous-spirited in the world.

Graham Butland, EACH Chief Executive said: ‘We are incredibly grateful to Sir John for giving his time to support of the nook appeal.

“We feel privileged to have had the opportunity to hear from the former Prime Minister.  The evening was extremely interesting and thoroughly enjoyed by all, especially as – during the Q&A session – Sir John did not shy away from answering any question asked of him, no matter how contentious!  I would also like to thank those who travelled from not only Norfolk, but as far afield as Texas, China and Northern Ireland to be with us tonight.

The nook appeal will transform children’s palliative care across Norfolk but we still have some way to go, which is why these events are so important.”
