Stepping inside the beautifully laid-out shop in the centre of historic Cambridge, an overwhelming sense of nostalgia washes over you. It’s not just the many rolls of classic British-designed cotton and linen fabrics or the wonderfully colourful collection of haberdashery, trims and sewing essentials that give you this feeling – it’s the old-fashioned friendly welcome and super helpful customer service that is reminiscent of a more civilized shopping experience.
Some may remember the shop when it was Callyco, and also remember Katie who managed the shop and who now owns and runs it as The Cambridge Fabric Company. With her background in graphic design and as a maker herself, Katie is perfectly placed to not only choose the most gorgeous designs for her stock of material, but also to offer practical advice to her customers. In fact, the shop achieved 100% for customer service in the recent local BID awards – the first time this had happened!
The main emphasis is on furnishing fabrics, with the shop specialising in cottons and linens, but there’s also a range of dress and quilting fabrics available. Very handily too is the ‘made to measure’ service, so you can choose gorgeous fabrics and get them expertly made into curtains, blinds and other soft furnishings by the shop’s team of experienced seamstresses.
Katie and her team offer a free no obligation quote and can also help with fitting. But if you do prefer a more DIY approach, you should check out the workshops* which cater for all abilities and with all those beautiful fabrics to choose from – will no doubt inspire you to get creative!
