National Hockey League Players’ Association deploys Darktrace AI

Darktrace, the world’s leading AI company for cyber defence, has today announced that the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) has deployed the Enterprise Immune System to protect the sensitive personal information of its 750 members across the US and Canada.

Founded in 1967, the NHLPA is the union of professional hockey players, responsible for negotiating and enforcing fair employment terms for its members, while also playing a critical role in the development of international hockey. The NHLPA network hosts highly sensitive data, such as professional hockey players’ personal information and confidential contract details. Safeguarding this critical data from sophisticated and fast-paced cyber-threats is a priority for the organization. The NHLPA chose to deploy Darktrace’s proven AI technology that detects and autonomously responds to emerging attacks, including ransomware, insider threat, ‘low and slow’ attacks, and threats that have never been seen before.

“Protecting professional hockey players’ interests is the bedrock on which the National Hockey League Players’ Association is built,” commented Stephen Frank, Director of Technology & Security, NHLPA. “With the prevalence of sophisticated external and insider threats, we knew we had to take a fundamentally different approach to cyber security. Darktrace’s AI technology catches the threats other tools miss and has enabled us to take our cyber resilience to the next level. With the Enterprise Immune System, we can assure our members that their information is fully protected.”

Modeled after the human immune system, the Enterprise Immune System uses AI algorithms to learn the ‘pattern of life’ for every user and device on a network. This dynamic understanding of what constitutes ‘normal’ enables the technology to detect sophisticated threats at their earliest stages. The Enterprise Immune System can also go a step further and take autonomous action to stop or slow down in-progress attacks before they can wreak havoc.

“The National Hockey League Players’ Association joins a growing number of organizations that lead the charge in adopting AI cyber technologies to safeguard their critical information assets and avoid reputational damage,” commented David Masson, County Manager for Canada, Darktrace. “With over 5,000 deployments of its technology, Darktrace is the recognized leader in this space, arming organizations with the AI they need to stay ahead of all known and unknown threats.”
