Help prepare the NHS workforce for the digital future

While it is hard to predict the future, we know that genomics, digital medicine, artificial intelligence and robotics will have an enormous impact on patients and the workforce over the next two decades.

These technologies are transforming our ability to empower patients to participate actively in their own care, with a greater focus on well-being, to prevent diseases such as cancer and hypertension, to predict the most appropriate treatments and to personalise the management of long-term conditions (also known as chronic diseases), such as diabetes and asthma.

Then Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Mr Jeremy Hunt, said: Every week we hear about exciting new developments surfacing in the NHS, which could help provide answers to some of our greatest challenges such as cancer or long-term conditions. These give us a glimpse of what the future of the whole NHS could be, which is why in the year of the NHS’s 70th birthday I want to empower staff to offer patients modern healthcare more widely and more quickly.”

Accordingly he commissioned an independent Technology Review led by Eric Topol, as a key strand of the workforce development strategy, ensuring that the NHS is at the forefront of life-saving or life-changing care for decades to come.

To inform the review, Health Education England wants to hear from people with evidence and experience of introducing or developing technologies in health and care, especially those with a perspective on the implications for the workforce, and healthcare workforce education and development.

The call for evidence is open until Wednesday 29 August at 12.00 noon

Dr Topol’s final report will be submitted to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in December 2018, after which wider engagement on the findings is planned from January 2019.
