Explore Independent Cambridge: Georgia King Design

With the help of Independent Cambridge - the community of ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, people, businesses, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: Georgia King Design.

As the digital age continues to grow apace, it’s heartening to know there are indies who remain passionate about the printed product, and champion personal service. Take award-winning art director and graphic designer Georgia King. Though her designs are forward-thinking, her approach to customers is delightfully old school. So, rather than pick up the phone or resort to email to discuss the whys and wherefores of a project, Georgia jumps on her bike and pedals documents across the city to her clients. How refreshing!

Georgia cut her teeth designing football brochures for Wembley Stadium, before landing her dream job at Good Housekeeping Magazine in London, specialising on the glossy’s exquisite food photoshoots. Many years freelancing in the capital for the likes of Marie Claire, Mountain Bike Rider and Which? followed, fuelling her unerring passion for magazines.

Returning to her native Cambridge 15 years ago, Georgia – who works from an office in Romsey - has built up an impressive portfolio, with clients including Cambridge Film Festival, Cambridge Assessment, Picturehouse Cinemas and Cambridge Publishers (CPL), and commissions ranging from travel guides for the wanderlust generation to brochures for the Early Learning Centre.

Finding inspiration for her creations from everyday life – anything from a mayonnaise jar label to a vibrant hue on a children’s menu – Georgia maintains that, despite clocking up 20 years in the business, she still gets a thrill from seeing her work in print.

Georgia’s main client is Murray Edwards College, for whom she produces prospectuses, weighty reports and an alumni magazine. She loves collaborating with Cambridge clients and hopes to work with more local indies. If you’re interested, do get in touch (her enthusiasm is truly infectious), though be sure you’ve got somewhere for Georgia to park her bike!

(Special thanks to Murray Edwards College for giving Independent Cambridge their kind permission to photograph in their College.)
