Explore Independent Cambridge: Footprint Signs & Graphics

With the help of Independent Cambridge - the community of ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, people, businesses, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: Footprint Signs & Graphics.

Eureka moments happen when we least expect. For James and Karen Hempstead, theirs struck on a sun-drenched beach in Australia’s Fraser Island. Having clocked up 13 years' expertise at a sign and graphics company, James decided it was time to go it alone. Watching his toes sink into the sand, the name Footprint came to him. Back home in Stow-cum-Quy, the family garage was transformed into a workshop and James started sign writing vehicles.

That was 10 years ago, and today – operating from a Clifton Road HQ – Footprint Signs & Graphics boasts seven staff (including Karen as company secretary) and a truly diverse portfolio, offering eye-catching window graphics, ‘Wayfinding’ signs, large format printed wall art, vehicle wraps and more.

The majority of clients are local, (South Cambs and the City Council, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Napp Pharmaceuticals, ARM and the University collges) though commissions have come from further afield: James recently overhauled the signage on a Fred Olsen ship, while cruising the Norwegian Fjords!

Architectural finishes are Footprint’s latest innovation. The self-adhesive laminates, available in 900 patterns, from to leather to marble, can be wrapped onto doors, tables, even conference rooms, creating a modern and cost-effective look. They’re genius!
