Here’s a novel idea for literature buffs; spend a week immersed in the life of a favourite author, visit their old haunts and discuss their works with world-class scholars, whilst living in Cambridge University’s hallowed halls. Sound marvellous? Well, it became a reality in 2015 when Dr Trudi Tate – a Fellow of Clare Hall – launched Literature Cambridge.
Enlisting an impressive roster of luminaries to teach, from Professor Dame Gillian Beer to Professor Frances Spalding, Trudi’s inaugural summer course on Virginia Woolf in 2016 was a resounding success, attracting students from as far afield as Spain, Germany, Hong Kong, Canada, the US, Australia and Brazil. Pupils get unrivalled access to leading academics, so you could quite possibly be talking Tennyson over tea at Fitzbillies! And excursions reveal hidden gems – such as rare manuscripts – not usually available to the public.
There are two week-long summer courses, offering lectures, supervisions and sightseeing, plus intensive Study Days at Stapleford Granary on Virginia Woolf, DH Lawrence, Shakespeare, First World War literature, nature poetry, contemporary writers, and many other topics.
Places are available for 2019’s summer schools, on Virginia Woolf’s Gardens and Fictions of Home: Jane Austen to the Present Day – and they are already being snapped up by enthusiasts far and wide.
