AI and science for better brain function

Cambridge Network Event

Join Cambridge Network for an evening of networking and talks exploring how research using AI and digital tools can help with early dementia and neurodegenerative disease diagnoses, which will result in better and more timely treatments and enhance the wellbeing of patients and their families. Our speakers will be Prof Zoe Kourtzi, Professor of Computational Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge and Dr Nick Taptiklis, Cambridge Cognition.

In a recent interview with BioBeat Prof Kourtzi says “The statistics about dementia are overwhelming: 50 million people worldwide live with dementia, 1 in 2 of us will be affected by dementia in our lifetime, a new patient is diagnosed every 3 seconds. But beyond statistics, dementia touches every family; each one of us has a personal story, a loved family member who battled with dementia and transformed our life perspective for ever. Yet, we still don’t have sensitive enough tools to diagnose dementia early when new treatments that we now see emerging can really make a difference before damage settles in the brain.

Prof Kourtzi will explain how her research group brings together behaviour, neuroscience, computational science and clinical practice expertise to understand the workings of the brain in health and disease. Computational models, harnessing the power of data and AI to understand the interactive factors that lead to brain and mental health disorders enable them to develop tools to predict disorders early and develop interventions tailored to individuals. Improving early prediction and prognosis when treatments can be most effective has strong potential to enhance the wellbeing of patients and their families, while reducing inequalities and costs in healthcare systems.

Prof Kourtzi will be joined by Dr Nick Taptiklis, Head of R&D Technology at Cambridge-based Cambridge Cognition who will give an overview of their current work in brain health. Cambridge Cognition is a leading provider of digital health solutions for brain health assessments, benefitting therapeutic areas such as Alzheimer's, MS, ADHD, Depression and more.
