Biomaterials and exercise in tissue regeneration with Dr Lívia Santos

Join ARU's Musculoskeletal and Developmental Biology Research Group Webinar Series, hosted by the Medical Technology Research Centre (MTRC), for an online seminar from Dr Lívia Santos addressing how biomaterials and exercise have been employed to improve tissue regeneration or repair. While biomaterials are well established in regenerative medicine, exercise or mechanical loading is just starting to emerge as a driver of tissue regeneration.

Dr Lívia Santos is a Senior Lecturer in Mechanobiology and Tissue Engineering at Nottingham Trent University (NTU).

Before this position, she was awarded a five-year tenure-track fellowship at the same institution. During this fellowship, she discovered that mechanical loading prompts bone cells to activate cellular processes critical to bone regeneration like bone remodelling.

Prior to this, Lívia was awarded a prestigious Intra-European Marie Curie Fellowship at Imperial College London in Prof Molly Stevens's lab. At Imperial, she launched a new research line in mechanobiology which elucidated the impact of extracellular matrix elasticity in endothelial cells (building blocks of blood vessels) within the context of bone regeneration.
