The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has committed to achieving Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2040 from its direct operational activities including high impact activities such as travel and field operations. The goal is to align with aims set by the Natural Environment Council which is part of the UK government's UKRI (Research and Innovation). As part of this commitment, BAS has developed a Net Zero Carbon strategy and delivery plan and identified key milestones along the Net Zero pathway to 2040.
A major series of decarbonisation projects are in the process of delivery, which include renewable energy and low carbon systems, energy storage, automation, a Digital Twin for the Royal Research Ship, RRS Sir David Attenborough and modernised and energy efficient infrastructure in Antarctica. The challenges to overcome to achieve Net Zero are significant, especially when operating in Antarctica. There are also however significant opportunities that will ensure the UK polar community can continue to deliver world class environmental research in Antarctica in the long term.
Nopi Exizidou is the Net Zero Transition lead at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). She is an Engineer by background with more than 13 years of experience on energy efficiency, carbon reduction and wider sustainability. At BAS she is leading the Net Zero Team. Her focus is on the development and implementation of the Net Zero Carbon strategy for the BAS Infrastructure, Transport & Logistics and Supply Chain activities. Her talk will include the technical measures that are being delivered.
