An exciting opportunity has arisen for two motivated Research Associates/Assistant to join the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit (CEU) at the Department of Public Health & Primary Care (DPHPC) to work on large-scale population studies of 'omics in common complex disease. The postholders will join the Butterworth group, which is at the cutting edge of multi-omics research to identify causes and predictors of cardiometabolic and other common diseases.
The postholders will be expected to develop and implement analysis pipelines that incorporate genomic data, wide angled data on molecular domains (e.g. thousands of plasma proteins, plasma metabolites, gene expression levels etc) and health outcomes data. Projects will involve world-leading studies created by the Unit - such as the UK Blood Donor Studies involving >100,000 UK blood donors and the BELIEVE study, a household survey of ~75,000 adults in Bangladesh - as well as other large-scale international biobanks such as UK Biobank, All Of Us etc. The projects will benefit from close collaboration with teams at the CEU and DPHPC, as well as nationally (e.g. collaborators in the HDR UK Driver Programme on Molecules to Health Records) and internationally (e.g. collaborators at the Berlin Institute of Health).
The preferred candidates will have a PhD or is in the final stages of PhD in a relevant area (e.g. epidemiology, genomics, computational biology, biostatistics). The ideal candidates will also have experience of analysing large-scale population data, genome-wide association studies and/or multi-omics analyses, and cluster computing. Postholders will be expected to lead the writing of impactful publications. They should have a pro-active and motivated mindset, attention to detail and strong communication skills.
The CEU is committed to supporting hybrid working for all staff, but staff are expected to work at the HLRI on a regular basis to help build our fantastic community and to aid integration. We welcome applications from those wishing to work part-time of no less then 0.5 FTE per week.
Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience), including those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD. Where a PhD has yet to be, awarded appointment will initially be made at research assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded (PhD needs to be awarded within 6 months of the start date).
Funding is available for 2 years from commencement in post (latest start date 1 April 2025).
