Cambridge, Pharma & Tech

The leading research stemming from Cambridge has played a major role in the world’s understanding of science since the 13th century. Considered as a one of the main intellectual hubs in the world, Cambridge hosts one of the most prestigious universities in the world as well as a number of astounding facilities such as the Cambridge Science Park. The Cambridge Science Park is truly astounding, serving as Europe’s largest and longest serving center for commercial research and development. Founded in 1970 by Trinity College, the park provides companies in the city with ample capabilities for life science research.

In recent times, a surge in growth within the pharma tech and life science has catapulted these industries into becoming some of the most profitable in Cambridge. The recent surge can be accredited to a growth in demand following COVID-19. The capital raised by companies within this industry is superb, reaching £7bn as a cumulative figure produced by the 627 companies working in the city. Comparatively, in 2015, companies in the industry only managed to generate £2.85bn, further portraying this gigantic growth.

The future of Pharma & Tech in Cambridge

Although the past achievements of pharma tech companies in Cambridge are impressive, the most intriguing aspect is the future potential of the sector. For example, AstraZeneca, a top 10 pharma tech company, has invested a large number of resources into developing their global headquarters in the city.

AstraZeneca’s Chief Executive, Pascal Soriot released a statement claiming,

‘Cambridge competes on the global stage as a respected innovation hub for life sciences and our choice of site puts us at the heart of this important ecosystem, providing valuable collaboration opportunities. Moving to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus means our people will be able to rub shoulders with some of the world’s best scientists and clinicians carrying out some of the world’s leading research – that’s a really exciting prospect. We hope that our move will contribute to the growing success of Cambridge’

Exemplifying this further, Colis Oncology, a leader in precision medicine for cancer treatment, also chose the city as their headquarters.

Sustainability in Pharma & Tech

The pharmaceutical and life sciences industry is a pioneer in environmentally conscious practice. Businesses such as the aforementioned AstraZeneca have stated their intention to eliminate their carbon emissions by 2025. The urge to push sustainable practice stems from the industry's rapid expansion as well as its youthful workforce.

A large part of reducing these emissions will involve managing the logistics surrounding company operations. Considering this, sustainable infrastructure will have to exist around the city to support the shift.

Green Logistics in Cambridge

According to the UK Climate Change Committee (UKCCC), HGV vehicles are responsible for 17% of total surface transport emissions, which is shockingly high considering these vehicles only make up 5% of all vehicles on the road. Although the technological advancements in the Pharma tech industry are far-reaching, they are not exempt from the same issues.

The use of completely electric HGVs is one solution by which the logistics sector may lessen the effects of HGV vehicle emissions. Despite early mistrust, businesses like Amazon are already incorporating these vehicles into their fleet, suggesting a significant shift is about to occur.

Additionally, supporting infrastructure such as Urban consolidation centers can assist in battling HGV emissions. These centers provide an efficient environment for logistics companies to process incoming and outgoing HGV’s on the outskirts of cities. These centers would also allow for the inclusion of electric HGV’s which can charge and operate from there.

With electric HGV technology slowly being introduced, these centers are going to be a great addition to any company’s fleet. Additional benefits include:

  • Air Quality improvement
  • Noise pollution reduction
  • Reduction of congestion
