What’s the Rescue the Refuge campaign about?
Historic buildings in Antarctica are subjected to extreme conditions and they need regular specialist conservation. Climate change is causing accelerated degradation and in 2022 our conservation survey prioritised the designated historic building for urgent repair. Despite being no bigger than a garden shed, the Blaiklock Island refuge made a big impact by providing a safe polar pit stop for the surveyors tasked with filling in the blanks on the Antarctic map in the 1950s. This is the last of its kind standing. Once a site is lost, it’s lost forever along with the stories of those who took shelter there.
What does the refuge need?
The exterior felt that protects the building from the relentless wind, ice and salt air has been lost, leaving the wood beneath exposed and vulnerable. As the joints between the timbers wear away the hut is susceptible to leaks threatening the original artefacts held within that tell the story of dog sled journeys in an unexplored land.
With your help, we will send two conservation carpenters and an artefact conservator next year to save this piece of Antarctic history for future generations. Work will be undertaken to the highest quality by experts following international heritage guidelines.
