New opportunities - NIHR i4i Funding

New opportunities for innovators in medical devices, in vitro diagnostics, and digital health technologies to secure funding for projects addressing existing or emerging health and social care needs.

NIHR i4i Funding

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Invention for Innovation (i4i) Programme is now accepting applications from researchers and organisations across the UK, including Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. This expansion, effective since Autumn 2023, opens new opportunities for innovators in medical devices, in vitro diagnostics, and digital health technologies to secure funding for projects addressing existing or emerging health and social care needs.

i4i Funding Streams:

  1. Product Development Awards (PDA): Support for collaborative research and development of medical devices, in vitro diagnostic devices, and high-impact patient-focused digital health technologies. Projects should have demonstrated proof-of-concept and a clear pathway towards adoption and commercialisation. There is no upper funding limit, but costs must be fully justified. Projects can last up to 36 months.

  2. Connect: Aimed at small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) developing medical devices, in vitro diagnostics, and digital health technologies. This stream helps SMEs reach the next stage in the development pathway, making them more attractive for further funding or commercial investment. Funding ranges from £50,000 to £150,000 for projects lasting 6 to 12 months.

  3. FAST (Funding At the Speed of Translation): Designed for innovators needing a small amount of funding to answer a specific question or fund a single piece of activity to advance healthcare technologies and interventions for increased patient benefit. Projects must have demonstrated experimental proof of concept as a minimum. Funding ranges from £50,000 to £100,000 for projects lasting 6 to 12 months.
