Domino has appointed James Cutforth as Head of Global Regulated Sectors to support customers, particularly in the pharmaceutical and tobacco sectors, to prepare for the need to use 2D codes to increase transparency and traceability and combat the risk of counterfeit products.
He says: “Domino has been at the forefront of global regulatory developments using serialised 2D codes. As a result we understand that speed and reliability are critical for our manufacturing customers and adopting 2D codes can come as a significant challenge.
“With GS1 Sunrise 2027 – an industry-wide standards-based initiative to see 2D codes accepted at the retail point of sale – and other stricter regulations on the horizon, we are committed to working with customers to understand potential blockers and develop solutions that will work within their industries.”
The transition from 1D barcodes to the new 2D barcodes, including Data Matrix and QR Codes, offers greater data capacity and accuracy. The fast few decades have witnessed growing regulatory requirements for 2D codes for consumer safety, traceability, and anti-counterfeiting purposes.
Globally a diverse range of industries are adopting more stringent requirements for 2D codes including pharma, medical devices, tobacco products, food products, alcoholic beverages, and agriculture.
James Cutforth concludes: “Over the years global businesses have trusted Domino to provide the necessary sector and technology expertise to help them to prepare for regulatory changes. We are ready to support businesses to equip their production lines so that they can handle the fast-paced printing of serialised 2D codes.”
