Technology for Good: Cambridge-based Alchemie Technology’s royal recognition for sustainability in fashion industry

Cambridge-based Alchemie Technology has been recognised among the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee commemorations, for its work to revolutionise sustainability in the fashion industry.

Dr Alan Hudd, founder of Alchemie Technology, and his wife Lita

Alchemie, which has created unique technology for the textile industry, reduces the amount of  water used to dye fabric by more than 95 per cent, and energy by more than 85 per cent, was invited to appear in the Official Platinum Jubilee Pageant Commemorative Album – celebrating the life and reign of the Queen.

The album also explores developments in the UK and around the world over the past 70 years and showcases a range of aligned organisations, who were selected to appear for their transformational contributions across the culture, society, technology and business spheres, reflecting the Queen’s decades of service.

As a leading ‘technology for good’ pioneer, Alchemie is profiled in the album – highlighting the shocking fact that textile production is one of the world’s biggest pollutants and Alchemie’s mission to clean up the industry.

Dr Alan Hudd, Alchemie’s founder, who was interviewed within the album, said:

“I set up Alchemie with a genuine passion to improve sustainability within the fashion industry, so it is an honour for our work to be recognised.

“The issues within the industry are a global problem, so we want to change this and make the UK the showcase for the world – demonstrating how to stop pollution caused by dyeing textiles. This is on par with the issues the Royal Family has championed, with commitments to sustainability and the environment as well as wider support for British enterprises.

“We have already sold seven of our revolutionary “Endeavour” and “Novara” machines this year, and are on track to have sold 15 by the end of 2022, showing great investment for change within the industry.”

Textile dyeing and finishing processes are some of the most polluting manufacturing processes on the planet and are responsible for over 3per cent of global CO2 emissions and over 20 per cent of global water pollution.

Alchemie’s mission is to transform the textile industry with digital manufacturing solutions that eliminate the environmental impact of polluting processes and stop 500 million tonnes of CO2 emissions being produced by the fashion industry by 2030.
