Our Animal Sciences & Technologies (AST) department sits within AZ’s Clinical Pharmacology and Safety Sciences, part of our wider Biopharmaceutical R&D unit; We support and drive in vivo studies for AstraZeneca in Cambridge. Our mission is to conduct studies to evaluate the efficacy, safety and pharmacokinetics of novel candidate drugs.

We’re looking for outstanding Formulation Scientists with a passion for pre-formulation and formulation science to collaborate within an in vivo broader team, working with Study directors and colleagues in Pharmaceutical Sciences. You will apply your scientific and technical formulation skills to deliver fit-for-purpose preclinical formulations (small molecules, but also more complex biological molecules). These formulations are pivotal to the delivery of pre-clinical PK/PD, efficacy and toxicological studies which enable selection and progression of suitable drug candidates across AstraZeneca’s core therapeutic areas including Oncology, Respiratory and Immunology, and Cardiovascular Renal & Metabolism).

The role requires a highly adaptive self-starter, with exceptional communication skills, and the ability to thrive in an interdisciplinary, truly fast-paced environment. Capability to flex between contributing both as a remarkable individual contributor, as well a great team-player within team and matrix environments is crucial.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducting formulation lab-based experimental work in accordance with project timelines

  • Contributing to the planning and coordination of preclinical formulations

  • Working cross-functionally to build and develop an understanding of the formulation challenges a compound may present for pre-clinical studies

  • Working with both your immediate team and internal cross-functional teams to effectively feedback on formulation methodologies, including proactive problem solving

  • Stock management of formulation vehicles, excipients and consumables

  • Ensuring effective supplies of test material from internal and external sources

  • Performing tasks in accordance with appropriate Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), quality and compliance standards, e.g. Good Laboratory Standards (GLS)

  • Documenting formulation work for enhanced work trail and quality control/assurance

Essential criteria

  • BSc or equivalent, in Pharmaceutical Sciences, a related subject or relevant experience

  • Experience in delivery of oral and parenteral formulations

  • Pharmaceutical industry experience

Desirable criteria

  • An understanding of physicochemical and solid-state properties and their relationship to formulation development

  • An understanding of multiple forms of formulations (solids, solutions, suspensions)

  • A basic understanding of biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics

  • Skills and Capabilities

  • An ability to work at pace and across multiple projects simultaneously, using initiative and imagination to meet agreed objectives and timelines

  • Excellent collaboration, team working and networking skills with the capability to work across boundaries
