Last Sunday (18 May), 50 intrepid Addenbrooke’s supporters gathered together at Ely College for the first ever Action Heroes Abseil.
Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT), the only dedicated charity for Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals, organised the event to raise funds for areas of greatest and most urgent patient need across the hospitals.
Participants, many of whom wore action hero fancy dress, were the first and last to abseil down Ely College’s 100ft Needham’s Tower, which will soon be demolished as part of a school refurbishment programme.
The event, which was supported by former patients, hospital staff and their family and friends has raised over £8,900 to help make a difference for patients at Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie.
Darren Ward, health care assistant on Ward G6 – delirium and dementia ward, was a real action hero in his Top Gun inspired outfit. He said: “It was great to take part in the first ever Action Heroes Abseil. It was good fun and I’d definitely do it again. I have raised over £900 to help towards upgrading the environment on the ward to make it more dementia friendly. Thank you to everyone who supported me.”
Michelle Gray, Head of Community Fundraising at ACT said: “We are absolutely delighted with the amount raised. The turnout on the day was fantastic and the atmosphere was buzzing. Thank you so much to everyone who was brave enough to take part and all those who generously sponsored them. The money raised will help make a significant difference for patients across the Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie.”
