Applications to Anglia Ruskin through UCAS have increased 7.9% on last year, compared to a fall of 7.4% across UK universities as a whole. However, Anglia Ruskin can now welcome more students than before after being awarded over 550 extra places from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), which is more than any other university in the country.
Clearing is for anyone who wants to come to university this September but has yet to secure a place. This can be due to a number of reasons, including students who have not got the results they had hoped for and people who are deciding late in the application cycle to apply, which may be due to the increase in tuition fees this year. Last year more than one in five of Anglia Ruskin’s Clearing applicants were mature students.
To accommodate this year’s predicted high demand for courses starting in September 2012, Anglia Ruskin will be running a series of clearing events at its main campuses in Chelmsford and Cambridge. Admissions tutors will be available to talk face-to-face with visiting students and Anglia Ruskin has doubled the number of phone lines and staff to handle enquires.
Sandra Hollis, Pro Vice Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin, said: “We are delighted that Anglia Ruskin is bucking the national trend and has experienced another year-on-year increase in applications.
“We are known for our world-leading research in areas such as the Allied Health Professions, English Language and Literature, and Art and Design; and we pride ourselves on creating a friendly and supportive environment in which every student can reach their potential. I am pleased to say that 90 per cent of our students are in employment or further study six months after graduating.
“These factors, as well as the £81million we have invested in new facilities over the last five years, have meant that Anglia Ruskin is proving more popular than ever. However, thanks to the extra places we have received this year from HEFCE, we still have vacancies in a variety of subjects including Accounting and Finance, Photography, Social Policy and Engineering.
“Clearing can prove to be a challenging time for some students who are yet to secure the course that is right for them, but our Admissions team will be able to help people make the right decision based on the options open to them.”
Prospective students are encouraged to visit www.anglia.ac.uk/clearing to view the full list of courses available and then call the Clearing Hotline, which opens at 8am on Thursday, 16 August (A-Level results day), on the telephone number given next to each course.
Students can also visit both the Chelmsford and Cambridge campuses on special Clearing Open Days on Saturday, 18 August from 9am to 2pm.
