Anglia Ruskin’s men’s team saw off Oxford University 3-1 in the final at the Don Valley Stadium after beating Aberdeen, Nottingham, Birmingham, Imperial and Heriot-Watt in previous rounds.
In the individual events, there were gold medals for Mike Stewart (U66kg dan grade) - pictured in action; Adrian Markov (U81kg dan grade) and Andre Cojuhari (+100kg dan grade). Both Janaina Magalhaes (U63kg dan grade) and Johnny Morris (U81kg dan grade) came away with bronze medals.
Bob Challis, who coaches the team, said: “To win the team event for the second year in a row is fantastic and shows our prominence in university judo. But it’s important not to judge our judo programme on performance alone.
“We have beginners, high performance coach education and judo research at Anglia Ruskin – the performance players are only one element. No other university in the UK has such a vast judo programme.
“I think we were unlucky to have all three of our U81kg dan grade men to end up on the same side of the draw. If not we could have maybe achieved gold, silver and bronze in that weight group. We are also delighted that Janaina won bronze as this is Anglia Ruskin’s first women’s judo medal at BUCS.”
During the entire competition Anglia Ruskin’s 13-strong team recorded 66 wins from 87 fights, of which 58 were by ippon (maximum score).
