The two-day programme of the Conference ( 6-7 March 2013) has been developed to cover the basics, method development, best practice and analysis of results vital to efficient and robust MS use.
Anthias Consulting Director and Senior Consultant, Diane Turner, will be giving two presentations on gas chromatography - mass spectrometry. In the first presentation entitled, “Hyphenating GC-MS: the MS Perspective”, the attendees will be provided with tips for the method development and optimisation of the MS part of a GC-MS method. In the next presentation, “Hyphenating GC-MS: the GC Perspective”, the attendees will be given advice on the GC part of the method when a GC uses a mass selective detector. Details of the two presentations can be found below.

Hyphenating GC-MS: the GC Perspective |
Diane Turner (Anthias Consulting, UK) Overview: There are a number of considerations to take into account when developing a gas chromatographic method for use with a mass selective detector. Incorrect choice of column i.d. and stationary phase; carrier gas flow rate; transfer-line temperature; carrier gas type; speed of separation (peak width); and GC consumables can all lead, at the very least, to de-sensitisation of the mass spectrometer or worse to pump failure, with increased maintenance or lack of peak data points also causing problems. |

Diane Turner (Anthias Consulting, UK) Overview: When developing and optimising the mass spectrometer part of a GC-MS method, after determining what data is required from the analysis the key to success is to examine the chromatogram to get the best results. Every application is different and the MS portion of the method needs to be set-up to match the separation achieved on the gas chromatograph. A change to the GC method may mean that a change to the MS method is also required. The key principles in the development and optimisation of an MS method are examined in detail for a scanning instrument, in this case a quadrupole, and a simultaneous acquisition instrument, in this case a ToF. |
