Are you travelling to Africa this winter?

If you'replanning on travelling to Gambia, West Africa, Brazil or Kenya - or are travelling via South Africa to Zambia - you may need a Yellow Fever vaccination or vaccination certificate, says The Travel Clinic, Cambridge and Ipswich.

It is important to remember that the certificate does not become valid until 10 days after the vaccination administration but is then valid for 10 years.

Outbreaks this year have been reported from Ghana, Cameroon and at the moment Sudan reports 167 deaths

Yellow Fever carries a high mortality rate and is spread by the bite of the infected mosquito – Aedes spp.

These mosquitoes are active during daylight hours and bite from dawn to dusk.  All travellers to this area are advised to take adequate mosquito bite avoidance measures including nets and repellents and travellers aged nine months and older are advised to visit a Yellow Fever vaccination centre, such as The Travel Clinic to discuss the latest recommendations and need for vaccination and certification.

·       Cases of Yellow Fever vary in severity.

·       Initial symptoms can take three to six days to become apparent and include pyrexia, headache, anorexia, nausea, and vomiting.

·       Many patients show an improvement in symptoms and gradual recovery three to four days after the onset of symptoms.

·       Within 24 hours of an apparent recovery, 15% to 25% of patients progress to a more serious illness – an acute haemorrhagic fever, in which there could be bleeding from the mouth, eyes, ears, and stomach, pronounced jaundice (from which the disease gets its name), and renal damage.

·        The patient will develop shock and the function of the major organs start to deteriorate.

·       20% to 50% of patients who develop this form of the disease do not survive

·       Infection confers lifelong immunity in those who recover.
