Each volunteer found themselves in the embarrassing situation of being slapped into handcuffs and led away to a waiting police vehicle in front of friends and colleagues. From there, they were locked away in a room at the Cambridge Royal Hotel until they had raised bail money totalling £500 or more before being returned to work.
Officers from the Special Constabulary were out making the arrests at venues across the city:
- Richard Tunnicliffe, Director, CBI East of England
- Isha Pitt, Presenter, Star Radio 107FM
- Keith McNeil, Chief Executive, Cambridge University Hospitals
- Hugo Ford, Divisional Director for Cancer, Cambridge University Hospitals
- Cameron Ewer, Partner, Strutt and Parker
- Dave Doggett, Chairman, Cambridge United
- Sanchia Norris, Partner, Peters, Elworthy & Moore
- John West, Manager, Volvo Construction
Richard Tunnicliffe of the CBI, who found himself being dragged out of a meeting at the Cambridge Building Society Head Office on Newmarket Road said, “Even though I knew it was going to happen it was still quite a scary experience when the police turned up and started reading me my rights, but it was great fun and I was delighted to be able to support our local hospitals in this way.”
Jo Pearson, Community Fundraising Manager at ACT said, “Everyone really got into the spirit of the occasion and played their part well, having kept the arrest secret from colleagues. We are very grateful to everyone who took part for their enthusiasm and commitment in raising money for Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie. The money raised will be used across the hospitals to help make a difference for patients.”
