Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) hosted a special Excellence in Sport event last night [Thursday, 14 November] featuring senior coaching and playing staff from Cambridge United.

The “in conversation” event saw Head Coach Garry Monk, Assistant Coach Jason Euell, and Club Captain Michael Morrison field questions from Mark Garratt, ARU’s Director of Marketing, as well as from an audience of local football coaches, teachers, ARU academics and students.

The evening explored the role of leadership in football and the challenges that the trio have faced during their successful careers.

ARU recently became Cambridge United’s Education Partner and is working closely with both the football club and the Cambridge United Foundation to improve health and wellbeing, and raise aspirations, across the city.

Head Coach Garry Monk said: “It was fantastic to meet the staff and students at ARU and we were really impressed with the thoughtful questions and conversation – I hope that those in attendance gained some value from the event.

“Both parties are already beginning to see the positive impact that this partnership can offer, and I look forward to visiting again.”

Mark Garratt, ARU’s Director of Marketing, said: "It was a sheer delight to Chair the ARU Excellence in Sport event with Garry Monk, Jason Euell and Michael Morrison. They were all incredibly engaging, authentic, insightful, and open about their experiences as leaders in football.

“The three of them are brilliant ambassadors for Cambridge United and I was also delighted to see the audience engage with them with equally insightful and challenging questions."

Last night was the latest in ARU’s series of Excellence in Sport talks. Previous events have featured GB Olympians Goldie Sayers, Gail Emms and Helen Richardson-Walsh, former England and Liverpool footballer John Barnes, and Britain’s most successful Winter Olympian Lizzy Yarnold.
