ARU staff learn about countryside management with CambridgePPF

Volunteering for a local charity is a great way to give something back to the local community and a team from the Students’ Union at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) recently showed their passion for pro bono work by helping out Cambridge Past Present & Future (CambridgePPF) at its Coton Countryside Reserve.

More than 20 office staff from Anglia Ruskin's Cambridge and Chelmsford campuses joined CambridgePPF rangers for Make a Difference Day to clear a patch of meadow that had become overgrown. The work was back breaking and the weather was cold but the team’s enthusiasm didn't wane.

Kerry Bell and Stephanie Lane, Volunteer Coordinators at ARU, said: “Every year we stage a team away day that brings together colleagues who work across the Students’ Union. It’s a great way for the team to connect and build relationships away from the office. Getting out in the fresh air is such a contrast to what we do day to day that it helps stimulate conversations and ideas that would not otherwise be discussed. We’d recommend a day with the CambridgePPF team to any local organisation looking to arrange activities with a corporate social responsibility (CSR) element.”

John Gibbs, Head Ranger at CambridgePPF said: “We are a small charity with two very large green spaces to maintain plus a number of other historic properties. Our ranger team does a fantastic job but there is always a long list of tasks to work through, so extra hands are appreciated. The team from ARU was fantastic. They worked solidly and cleared a large patch of land that we’ll now graze to help turn it back in to a fully fledged meadow.”

CambridgePPF offers a range of volunteering opportunities for individuals, groups and local companies.
