Bidwells hosts grand opening of new Stonecross residential office

More than 100 people gathered for the grand opening of the Stonecross residential office, which has undergone a major refurbishment programme to provide the Bidwells' team with a striking new venue fit for the 21st Century.

The refurbishment has been carried out over a number of months and included a complete overhaul of the offices in Trumpington High Street, as well as the creation of a new defined glass-fronted entrance, large reception area, new meeting rooms and open plan workplace.

The grand opening of the new offices was held earlier this month and guests included clients, developers, private investors and landlords as well business associates such as solicitors and surveyors.

The theme of the evening was based around the opening night at the theatre and as part of the event there was a roped entrance leading to a blue carpet, and guests were greeted with drinks and canapes served by ushers and the ambiance of the night was provided by music from a professional pianist.

Chris Carey, Head of Residential, gave a short speech to the guests, in which he highlighted the major changes to the Cambridge property market since Stonecross was opened in 1987.

He told the guests that during this period the national average house price was around £60,000 and you could buy a property for £250,000 in Barrow Road, one of the city's most prestigious addresses.

Fast-forward to 2015 and the national house price stands at £204,000 a 233% increase and to buy a house in Barrow Road you would now need around £2m - an increase of 700%, which is more than three times the UK average.

When Bidwells opened Stonecross in 1987 it had been carefully picked as the right location for the firm, even though many estate agents were based along Regent Street, known then as 'Estate Agents Row'.

But Bidwells wanted to be different from the pack and after looking at various options the Stonecross office was seen to be the perfect choice, not least because it was so easily accessible and offered customers an easy route in and provided much needed visitor parking spaces.

Now almost 30 years later, a review of the location still concluded Stonecross was in the best place for its clients and even more so now that major developments are taking shape on the south side of the city close to the Stonecross office.

Chris said: "There are so many great developments taking shape across the south side of the city and it's almost like there has been a shift of gravity from the city centre, and as a result we are now very much at the heart of the housing stock.

"Bidwells is synonymous with mid to high value properties which of course we still offer, but we also meet the needs of the diverse Cambridge population and have everything on our books from one-bedroom apartments, classic terrace city homes and the top end £3m family houses.

"Looking back over the last 20 years I can still remember the significant milestone when we sold the first home to break the £1m barrier in Cambridge back in 1996 and now of course it is fairly commonplace.

"After more than 30 years with Bidwells I can honestly say this is the best team of people I have had the privilege of working with across all our main service areas from Town and Country Houses, New Homes and Lettings.

"They are such a dedicated group, providing a first class service to our clients. We have a team of 30 and more than 50% have been with us 10 years or more. Given that so many have stayed with us for such a long period of time I think this is a clear refection that Bidwells is a great place to work and build a career."
