Bidwells Project Management team attends royal opening

Members of the Bidwells Project Management Team were invited to attend the official opening last week of the Whittle Building at Peterhouse, Cambridge, by HRH The Prince of Wales.

John Pearson, Nick Pettit, Richard Pilsworth from the Project Management Team and Civil Structural Engineer Alan Wright were all invited to attend the special ceremony which was held on Monday 23 February.

The event was to mark the opening of the Whittle Building, a new purpose built student accommodation at Peterhouse.

John was then among a small selection of key people who were presented to HRH for a brief meeting.

Prince Charles spent the afternoon at the event, meeting with invited guests before he unveiled a plaque to celebrate the completion of the Whittle Building.

Following the event there was a talk by Ian Whittle about his father Sir Frank Whittle, who studied at Peterhouse for two years, graduating with a First in 1936.

Bidwells provided project management, civil / structural engineering and health and safety consultancy services over the four years of the detailed design and construction stages of the new Whittle Building. The construction stage took 26 months and involved the demolition of the Bath House, the refurbishment of the existing building at Fen Court and the construction of the new Whittle Building.

Designed by John Simpson in the Tudor-Gothic style, the Whittle Building forms the fourth side of Gisborne Court (Grade 1 Listed) built within the Georgian Period of the 1820s, and links to Fen Court (Grade 2 Listed).  The new building has brick and stone facades with castellated parapets, dormer windows and slate roofs mirroring the architectural style of Gisborne Court and joins to Fen Court.  The rooms within the Whittle Building are arranged around a delightful central spiral staircase and are fitted to meet modern day standards.  The new building houses 24 students and has a JCR, Fellow's Room, a Fellow's Guest Room, and a gym, bar and a function room in the newly constructed basement which also links to Fen Court.

The Whittle Building is the last big project of the Master Plan at Peterhouse, although some smaller refurbishment work still continues, which Bidwells is still involved in.

Another project as part of the Master Plan included the conversion of a music room to create student accommodation. This involved inserting a mezzanine floor at first level which also assisted in strengthening the building.

Speaking after the event John said: "Being presented to HRH Prince Charles at the official opening of the Whittle Building today, and shaking his hand, was a very special moment for me personally and aptly marked the culmination of four years of dedicated professional services by all members of the Bidwells team at Peterhouse."
