Working in and around Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, the aim of the project is to help people suffering from traumatic head injuries move towards independent living.
Mary Goode, Chief Executive of Headway Cambridgeshire, said: “We are very grateful to the Big Lottery for providing the continuation funding, allowing us to provide the help our clients need at a very vulnerable time in their lives. A brain injury can be devastating, not only for the person injured but also for their families. This funding will enable us to provide that much-needed help when they need it most.”
One person who has already benefitted from the service Headway Cambridgeshire offers is Mark who suffered the cumulative effects of a number of head injuries, the most recent of which was being struck by a tree branch while running his own gardening maintenance business. Mark had to stop running his business because he could no longer manage the physical nature of the job and his injuries were also impacting on his relationship with his wife, who had to take more of a caring role, supporting him to remember day-to-day tasks and helping him to cope with his mood swings.
However, having got in touch with Headway, both Mark and his wife were given advice, support and information that helped him cope with the challenges he was facing. He has now got a part time job and continues to benefit from Headway Cambridgeshire’s support.
