Lucy's talk, which is suitable for everyone aged nine and over, promises to be a fascinating introduction to this topic and hopefully it will capture the imagination of the physicists and cosmologists of the future!
Anglia Ruskin's Community Engagement Officer, Rachel Moss
Schoolchildren in Essex will get the chance to journey through space, explore black holes and learn more about the big bang when author Lucy Hawking, daughter of the famous physicist Professor Stephen Hawking, visits Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford on 19 October.
Lucy has toured the world giving popular talks on physics, astronomy and cosmology to young audiences, and was an invited guest speaker at NASA's 50th birthday celebrations where she gave a talk on engaging young people in science and education. Lucy was also awarded the Sapio Prize for Popularizing Science in 2008.
Alongside her father, Lucy has co-authored a series of Cosmic George books, which through adventure stories introduce children to the wonders of physics and cosmology.
In the first book George's Secret Key to the Universe, two children find a computer portal through which they can slip into the solar system and beyond. Among the topics covered in the books are black holes, the formation of the solar system, our place in the solar system and the way that we relate to the universe around us.
The free event, held in conjunction with the Just Imagine story centre, is part of the Chelmsford Ideas Festival and will feature a recorded message from Professor Stephen Hawking.
The talk on Friday, 19 October will run from 10.30am-11.30am on Anglia Ruskin's Chelmsford campus and places must be booked in advance. For further information and to book places, contact Rachel Moss on 0845 196 4723 or rachel.moss@anglia.ac.uk
