On 22nd March 2012, the Friends of Addenbrooke’s – the volunteer arm of ACT (the independent charity for Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie) – will host its annual corporate fundraiser at Caxton Karting Centre.
The event will pit Cambridge companies against one another in a two-hour endurance race that includes a fundraising sin bin. Participants that drive in an unsporting fashion and are spotted doing so will be liable to a time penalty that takes them off the track. Competitors then face two options. Colleagues of the individual in question can chose to buy them out early with a cash donation or, their competitors can pay to keep them out of the race for longer. Either way, with every penny going to an important local cause, it’s bound to get competitive.
Cam Cicionne, Marketing Manager at KartSport said "We like to actively support charities in the local area and have been extremely happy to make the circuit available for the annual Karting Challenge for the Friends of Addenbroooke's, to raise funds for prostate cancer; a very worthy cause."
This year the challenge is open to ten local companies on a first come first served basis. Previous participants have included Price Bailey, Mills & Reeve, Signify, Vindis Group, Cheffins and Pricewaterhouse Coopers.
Companies can front teams of any size. Last year the challenge raised more than £2000. In 2012 the Friends of Addenbrooke’s hope to generate even more cash to pay for additional practical everyday items that make a real difference to patient care at the hospital. Previous events have helped purchase phlebotomy chairs, magazines for the children’s ward, specialist pumps and much more.
Entrance fees are £400, including refreshments and a buffet for drivers and guests. Anyone interested in racing, should contact the event organiser, Jane Small – Chairman of the Friends of Addenbrooke’s: janesmall100@gmail.com.
