With more and more electric cars on our roads, the Combined Authority is asking people in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough for their views on what has been described as the next transport revolution.
Working with Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council, the Combined Authority wants local opinions to help plan for more electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the region to help meet demand. The Combined Authority wants to make sure they are planned for in the right way, informed by people’s views.
Are you thinking of buying an electric car? What might be stopping you? The region is estimated to need up to 10,000 charging points by 2030, but what are the best places for them? What about accessible charging points for people who don’t have off-road parking? All views are important, whether people own an EV or not.
The Combined Authority is responsible for transport planning in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and its recently approved Local Transport and Connectivity Plan (LTCP) aims to transform journeys in the region, including by lowering greenhouse gas emissions to support net zero carbon emissions targets.
Transport, including public transport and car journeys, are responsible for about a quarter of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s carbon dioxide emissions. To reduce this, the LTCP is guiding investments to increase public transport use, encourage more cycling and walking, and to support the switch away from petrol and diesel vehicles.
In addition, new laws mean that by 2035, the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will end. The Combined Authority aims to help bring forward enough charging points in the right places to support the growing transition to EVs.
The Combined Authority’s vision for charging points is:
“For everyone in the region to have the necessary electric vehicle charging infrastructure available in the right place, at the time they need. This charging infrastructure will be high quality, safe, affordable, environmentally sustainable, and accessible.”

The Combined Authority is also working with Peterborough City Council and Cambridgeshire County Council on a draft Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy which will be further informed by the survey feedback.
Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Dr Nik Johnson said: “Less pollution, cleaner air and zero tailpipe emissions are all fantastic benefits of the electric vehicle revolution and a key part of our plan to transform transport in our region. But this transition will be slowed down if we don’t have enough charging points in the right places. Lots of people have views on electric cars and electric car charging, and we want to hear them.”
