One of the founder members was Bill Ison, a former Marshall Instructor, who began the group in a small metal hangar – which the Cambridge Flying Group still occupy to this day – under the enthusiastic guidance and support of Sir Arthur Marshall.
For the past 60 years, the Marshall family have been staunch supporters of the Cambridge Flying Group and as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations, Sir Michael Marshall flew in one of their Tiger Moths, accompanied by one of the Cambridge Flying Group Instructors, Ian Glenn.
Sir Michael Marshall’s step-son, Christopher Walkinshaw, the Communications Director for Marshall of Cambridge, flew in formation with his step-father in a second Tiger Moth!
Sir Michael Marshall said: ‘This year also marks the 75th Anniversary of the first Tiger Moth arriving at Cambridge Airport in 1938 and no airfield in the United Kingdom can match our record of having operated Tiger Moths for flying instructional purposes on an unbroken basis for 75 years’.
