Cambridge Healthcare scoops Innovation Award

Cambridge Healthcare, an attic start-up which began just a year ago, has won a prestigious health innovation award for designing the world's first healthcare applications store.

Cambridge Healthcare has scooped the prestigious HealthInvestor’s Innovation Award for its pioneering smartphone-enabled web portal which will revolutionise the way patients and medics share information, enabling patients to take control of their personal medical records.

How are you? was developed a year ago by Dawson King, 29, and will be the world’s very first healthcare applications store and social network of healthcare. Uniquely, How are you? is free to all parties in the UK.

HealthInvestor Awards 2012 is the highlight of the year for the independent health sector, and the start-up company Cambridge Healthcare beat several multi-national companies for the accolade, which was announced at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

The judging panel praised the e-health portal’s pioneering technology which, for example, will enable blood test results to be sent directly to a patient’s electronic health record, as well as facilitating online medical consultations.

In their comments, the judges said:

“Cambridge Healthcare and it’s How are you? web service demonstrates how we can positively exploit the digital world to empower patients and deliver patient centric care. How are you? is easy to use and promises the functionality we want from digital technology – allowing patients, their family and clinicians to communicate with each other, store information for better health outcomes.

“Cambridge Healthcare, with its apps store for patients and practitioners alike, has been the most innovative entrant, even though it is the smallest entrant.”

Dawson has already met with Health Secretary Andrew Lansley to discuss his personal health record and its free access to patients and practitioners throughout the NHS. It meets NHS planned reforms to innovate and introduce healthcare technology; by 2015, GPs will be required to give patients online access to their medical records, putting patients in control of the health and care information they need.

Dawson King, founder of Cambridge Healthcare said:

“We were delighted to win the HealthInvestor Innovation award, which is one of the most sought after awards within our industry.  Cambridge Healthcare developed howareyou.com in direct response to the UK government’s commitment to deliver better outcomes and an enhanced experience of care for people living with long-term conditions.

“Our platform will transform the face of healthcare information and is designed to enable connected care for patients all over the world. We are working in a number of countries outside of the UK with international partners to advance the global information revolution for the common good.”

Since starting in April 2011 when Dawson began designing How are You?, Cambridge Healthcare has developed a robust system and secured approval for hosting within the NHS’s own N3 data network.  By December 2011, How are you?  had scooped the most prestigious engineering award, chosen from 420 entries from 27 countries to win the 2011 Institution of Engineering and Technology Global Innovation Award for best IT Technology.

The team has set up trials within the NHS and Third Sector organisations, raised venture capital funding and entered into advanced discussions around licensing with a plethora of potential partners in New Zealand, Canada, Hong Kong, China and elsewhere in Europe.   In addition, a partnership with Microsoft will soon see How are you? fully integrated with Microsoft’s HealthVault platform.

Dawson added:

“Cambridge Healthcare’s vision is for free access to How are you? It is truly patient-focused portal and a unique social network of healthcare.  The company will generate revenue from third party app developers and industry/sector partnerships in international markets.”

Dawson started work on How are you? from his attic and has since raised venture capital to grow the business. He is a member of the NHS Innovation Council in the East of England.

Dawson’s co-director is Prof Alan Barrell, chair of the NHS Innovation Council in the East of England and chair of Health Enterprise East.
