Conference Cambridge is celebrating the news that Cambridge is proving more popular than ever as a destination for conferences and events, according to the 2014 City & World Rankings Report released by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).
The city has jumped in global rankings for events held in 2014 from 182nd in the world to 101st, up 81 places and in Europe from 95th to 58th, up 37 places.
However the most impressive increase is in UK terms where Cambridge has now made it into the top five cities, in fifth position behind London, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester. In 2013 it was in eighth place.
These rankings are based on the total of international association meetings held year on year, up 38% in 2014 versus the previous year and the number of delegates, which show a 43% increase for the same period.
Judith Sloane, Deputy Manager at Conference Cambridge said: “We are delighted with these latest rankings – to be fifth most popular UK destination for conferences and events behind our major cities is a great achievement. The improvement in our global and European positions is also excellent and we will continue to build on this success by developing our service and in particular our conference ambassador programme in the hope that even more international associations will bring their events to the city in the future.
“These figures reinforce the feedback that we receive from event organisers and delegates who appreciate the range of venues we can offer for events of all sizes and budgets, together with the unique experience that the city and its environs offers visitors. Cambridge is very accessible from all over the world and our academic setting, our proximity to scientific and technological hubs together with a wealth of social programme options such as walking tours and punting on the River Cam make Cambridge a compelling destination that is clearly reflected in the report”.
