Cambridge lawyer Julie Moktadir, head of immigration at Stone King, explains what EEA nationals must do with the deadline fast-approaching.
"The UK is no longer a part of the EU," said Julie.
"For EEA nationals who exercised their right of free movement prior to 1 January 2021, the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) enables eligible individuals to continue to their residency in the UK.
"Successful applicants will be granted either settled or pre-settled status, depending on the length of time the applicant has been in the UK.
"Individuals granted settled status will have demonstrated continuous residence in the UK, meaning they have been living in the UK for a continuous five-year period. They may later apply for British citizenship where eligible.
"Those granted pre-settled status do not have continuous residence. Once individuals with pre-settled status obtain continuous residence through living in the UK for a continuous five-year period, they may apply for settled status.
"The deadline to the scheme is 30 June 2021. EEA and Swiss nationals without status must apply to continue residing in the UK."
