CHaOS is a group of student volunteers at the University of Cambridge who take a wide variety of fun and interactive science experiments to schools, festivals and community events around the country. The CHaOS Summer Roadshow took place over 4 weeks during 2012, with over 60 volunteers visiting locations in Hertfordshire, Hampshire and Devon.
The Young People of the Year Awards set out to showcase the positive impact that many young people are having on the community and further afield as well as highlighting individuals and groups as good role models. CHaOS were among the finalists at the Cambridgeshire awards ceremony, held in Ely Cathedral on Wednesday.
Speaking after the award ceremony, Anna Hughes, the President of CHaOS said, “We were delighted to be selected as one of just 12 finalists from the whole of Cambridgeshire. It’s fantastic to receive recognition for the hard work and dedication that our many volunteers put in throughout the year.”
CHaOS members are also known for their very popular ‘Crash, Bang, Squelch!’ event at the Cambridge Science Festival. This annual event has been a major attraction at the Cambridge Science Festival since 1998. Hands-on experiments for children are used to explain topics as varied as the physics of light, how to split water using electricity and the biology of the human body. During the 2012 Festival, the free event was filled to capacity for most of the day, attracting more than 2,000 visitors to see around 50 experiments run with the help of over 120 student volunteers.
