Chisholm Trail: Underpass works mean temporary closure of Newmarket Road

Work on the Chisholm Trail and Abbey-Chesterton Bridge project, which will form a new foot and cycle route through the city, has reached the stage where an underpass is to be installed under Newmarket Road.  This will mean a temporary closure of the road to traffic.

Chisholm Trail _ Newmarket Rd diversions

While some of these closures will be overnight,  Newmarket Road  will be closed to all traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists, for a week between 8 pm on Friday 26 March and 6 am Friday 2 April.

The map below shows the section of Newmarket Road which will be affected by the closures.

Enabling Works:

January – September 2021

Some footpaths will be closed with pedestrians having to use the footpath on the other side of the road.

Narrow lane traffic management will be in place on the road and will remain open to two-way traffic.

Diversions

When Newmarket Road is closed to traffic, the following diversions, shown on the map below, will be in place: -

For Motor Traffic: - Signed diversion routes will be in place for motor traffic while the road is closed.

For Bus Users: - Buses that currently use Newmarket Road will be diverted. The bus stops on Newmarket Road between Coldhams Lane Junction and the McDonalds roundabout will be temporarily suspended with no service. Bus operators will advise of changes to their services nearer the time. For details on Stagecoach bus services please visit www.stagecoachbus.com or follow the operator on Twitter @stagecoach_east.

For Cyclists and Pedestrians: - There will be a separate, signed diversion route for cyclists and pedestrians across Coldhams Common. For pedestrians who are unable to use the diversion route there will be a free of charge shuttle service available from one side of the closure to the other.  Arrangements are currently being finalised to ensure this service is COVID-safe and details will be available in due course at www.greatercambridgepartnership.org.uk/chisholm[[{"fid":"291495","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Chisholm Trail _ Newmarket Rd diversions","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":"Chisholm Trail _ Newmarket Rd diversions"},"link_text":false,"type":"media","field_deltas":{"1":{"format":"default","alignment":"","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"Chisholm Trail _ Newmarket Rd diversions","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":"Chisholm Trail _ Newmarket Rd diversions"}},"attributes":{"alt":"Chisholm Trail _ Newmarket Rd diversions","title":"Chisholm Trail _ Newmarket Rd diversions","class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"1"}}]]
