Richard gained his membership through the Institution’s Professional Review process. Professional Review is one of the routes to becoming a professionaly qualified Member. The Review involves the production and submission of reports and an interview with and presentation to senior members of the profession. Richard was also required to attain an NVQ level 3.
The Jean Venables Medal is presented annually to the best Technician Professional Review (TPR) candidate. It is open to all applicants who have passed their TPR in the previous year.
Richard’s presentation for the Review was ‘Under Track Crossing Four’ described the engineering challenges encountered, and subsequent solutions achieved, during the construction of two augured foul drainage runs. It specifically focused on one run, which was constructed beneath two District Light Railway lines and two Network Rail goods lines.
Several factors during construction resulted in the final drainage run being re-designed. Richard was the contractor’s supervisor and site engineer for the project; conducting the setting out for the works, liaising with the various stakeholders and ensuring the project complied with the strict health and
safety regulations of the site in east London.
Richard said: “I am extremely delighted to have won the 2013 Jean Venables Medal. It is great confirmation of the work I have done up to this point in my career. My success is largely due to the excellent Civil Engineer Training and Development Program at VolkerFitzpatrick.”
Tough Competition
Richard was one of three finalists who competed for the award. The other finalists were David Smith from Tube Lines and Richard Knight of Raymond Brown Construction.
Richard is the first engineer to achieve Technician level with VolkerFitzpatrick. They hope this will encourage more employees, who are eligible, to consider this route.
To have been nominated and won reflects great credit on Richard and all those who have supported him during his training and development and preparation for his Professional Review. He will be presented with the medal in October.
