CMR announces plans for new UK cutting-edge headquarters

CMR Surgical, the British company developing the next-generation surgical robot, has signed an agreement to develop its new 42,000 square foot UK headquarters on the outskirts of Cambridge. Based in the newly developed Evolution Business Park, the site will accommodate its rapidly growing, highly skilled team.

Demonstrating its commitment to the UK, CMR will house its entire company - including engineering, research, manufacturing, clinical and commercial teams - under one roof. The space will also include laboratories, test and final assembly facilities and a demonstration operating room.

The move reflects the accelerated growth rate the company has experienced, more than doubling in size in the past year. It now employs more than 140 people in Cambridge and expects to grow significantly again in 2018.

CMR has developed Versius, a surgical robot designed to meet the complex requirements of laparoscopic surgery, and has filed more than 150 patents throughout its development.  Versius, inspired by the human arm, has remarkable dexterity, flexibility and reach, to enable a new paradigm in surgical experience in support of CMR’s aim of making minimal access surgery available to all.

Martin Frost, CMR’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Cambridge is the innovation capital of Europe so it’s an ideal place for us to build our next generation product; one that will bring the benefits of minimal access surgery to millions of people worldwide.  There are few places in the world where you can find all the skills you need to develop and commercialise such an exciting medical device as the Versius robot, but the UK, and more specifically Cambridge, is definitely one of them.

“This is a significant infrastructure investment in CMR, reflecting the momentum of the company, the confidence of its shareholders and the global market demand for Versius.”

CMR expects the new building to be complete within a year. CMR have been advised by Michelle Baldock of VSHLaw Solicitors and architects WMBstudio.

Evolution Business Park is located on the north side of Cambridge just off junction 33 of the A14 between Milton and Impington.

About the CMR surgical robotic system

Designed to meet the complex requirements of laparoscopic surgery, Versius’ compact size fits easily in the existing surgical workflow, while its ergonomic console design allows surgeons to work in a way that reduces physical and mental effort.  Intended to be used across a range of surgical specialties, the versatility and portability of Versius – enabled by a unique and patented four-axis wrist joint – expands the potential for higher utilisation. This allows healthcare providers to offer the benefits of robotic-assisted procedures in a cost-effective way.
