Confidence at record high among exporters

Companies trading overseas are reporting an increase in confidence, with 72 per cent of exporters expecting their turnover to improve in the months ahead – the highest level since 2007.

The British Chambers of Commerce/DHL Trade Confidence Index measures UK exporting activity and business confidence of over 2,400 firms. There’s good news for the job market too with 34 per cent of exporting firms reporting that they expect to increase staff over the next quarter.

John Bridge OBE, Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, said:  “These exceptional levels of confidence are evidence that companies are recognising the many opportunities that exist within overseas markets. Exports to India, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia remain buoyant with companies from Cambridgeshire exporting over £10million worth of goods to those three destinations in January 2014.

“As a result of the dedication of businesses looking to emerging markets, countries such as Vietnam have also broken into the top 20 destinations for exporters in our region and that’s an upward trend that we expect to see continue.”

To help existing and potential exporters explore these new opportunities, companies are invited to learn more about markets in Vietnam at an event being held in Peterborough on Monday 10 March. ‘Doing Business with Vietnam’ will provide practical advice from experts with first-hand experience of the region, presenting the opportunities for both those seeking to source goods and those wishing to export products and services.

Piers Craven, Head of UKTI, British Embassy Hanoi will highlight the areas offering the greatest opportunities for British companies, while David Moir of UKTI East provides insight based on his recent trade mission to Vietnam. The event will include an insight into the economy and a legal perspective including contract law and matters relating to operating in Vietnam from Federico Vasoli from event sponsors Hunt & Coombs, a registered foreign lawyer at the Hanoi Bar.

Chris Kubicki, Chair of the Chambers’ International Sector, said:  “This high-profile event is designed both for companies looking to gain or increase exposure to the rapidly growing Far East economies and those wishing to maximise competitive advantage through low cost product sourcing. Vietnam is rapidly gaining a reputation as the low cost centre for sourcing manufactured goods. There’s also a strong draw on imports and opportunities are growing for exporters to secure early stage entry into what is becoming a key Asian market.”
